EXECUTIVE INTERVIEW

Wolfgang Spahn,
Head of Mission Critical Systems Communication Products, ABB

Your job scope covers a wide range of areas. As an ATM professional, which area(s) do you think should be the priority?

As a technology provider to the Air Traffic Management segment, enabling successful digital transformation for mission critical infrastructure communication is the one of the key areas of focus for us at ABB. People’s lives depend on Air Traffic Management, and ABB is dedicated to enabling digital transformation without compromising security and reliability.

What regulations do you think will make the biggest impact?

As air traffic dramatically grows and as digital transformation of air traffic management (ATM) accelerates so does critical dependency on the underlying communication network. There is no room to compromise on safety, security, and reliability, when fulfilling ATM operational efficiency needs and adopting new technologies in communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS). Further, it is important for regulations in Air Traffic Management to be approached and standardized globally, rather than be based on local or regional considerations.

How can we improve collaboration in the industry?

Future solutions transfer more and more control function towards very mighty but complex/deeply connected control & communication systems, that we expect will grow with the needs of the airport operator or the Air Navigation Service Provider’s operations. To really make this happen the industry truly has to collaborate.

What are the major challenges you face in your day to day role?

Digital transformation continues to accelerate, without the necessary attention to detail. As technology and solution providers, we need to understand while building networks, that we not only support the demand for higher speed, but also continue, to assure reliability, efficiency and security.

What would you say are the biggest challenges in the industry?

ANSP’s face several challenges that include a sharp increase in air traffic growth, future integration of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), and dynamic security threats. While addressing these challenges, it is paramount that air traffic continues to operate in a safe and reliable manner.

One of the biggest challenges the industry is facing today is that technology is progressing on divergent paths. From the high variety of possibilities, the industry needs to select the most viable and secure path forward.

What do you think will be the key ATM trends in the region over the next 2 years?

Over the next two years, air navigation service providers (ANSPs) must take into account and cater to an increase in capacity and at the same time, ensure that their networks are extremely secure against security threats from different quarters.

How do you feel technology will change ATM?

In the future, ATM technology will cater to much higher capacity due to the growing passenger numbers, while providing the necessary comfort and safety and security will be the priority for ANSPs.

What are you looking forward to most at the Global Air Traffic Management Conference?

I am looking forward to meeting industry experts, who are eager to continue to shape the future, in a highly dynamic region of the world.
